Wondering what native species you should be planting? Laurie will go over the “Grow Me Instead” PlantWise program which offers garden plant alternatives to invasive plants. She will talk about invasive species and the high priority plant species in the Kootenays. Brenda and Valerie will provide information on native plants, the principles of “ecological gardening,” and about local native plant alternatives you could consider for your home space.
Laurie Carr, B.Sc.F, M.Sc., Development Coordinator, Central Kootenay Invasive Species Society. Laurie’s background is in plant community and population ecology research. After being the CKISS Board President, Laurie now manages program development which includes everything from partnership building to strategic planning and graphic design.
Brenda Beckwith PhD, Principal, KinSeed Ecologies. Brenda, a plant ecologist and ethnobotanist, has helped people discover and incorporate native plants into gardens and restoration sites in both BC and California. In its second year, KinSeed offers native plant seeds, consulting, and native plant propagation services in the West Kootenay region.
Valerie Huff MSc, Restoration Botanist, Kootenay Native Plant Society (KNPS). Valerie has been a professional botanist in the West Kootenay for over 25 years. Co-founder of KNPS, her love of plants and extensive training and knowledge in restoration ecology, plant propagation, and agronomy informs and enlivens both her work and her life.
